The Tertiary Preparation Program is a one-day online workshop available to all postgraduate and undergraduate coursework students in the faculties of:

  • Science (SCI)
  • Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology (EAIT)
  • Medicine (Med)
  • Health and Behavioural Sciences (HABS)

Writing and studying in the sciences and engineering present specific requirements and challenges. Consequently, this program will firstly explore the features of effective writing in these disciplines. While a main focus will be on the standard lab report genre, features common to other report genres and how tables and figures can be incorporated effectively in writing and presentations will also be considered. The program will then consider the challenges of studying effectively in jargon heavy and quantitative courses, and discuss effective approaches for meeting these challenges. Finally, the program will look at common problems with student short answer exam question responses in these disciplines, and explore the features of stronger answers.

While the program is targeted primarily at commencing students, continuing students who wish to refine and develop further their writing skills and approaches to learning would also benefit from participating in the program.
